Vince Cable, the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, and Skills, has announced that the government is going to be investing heavily in UK businesses working on 3D printing projects.

During a visit to the Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry, Cable said "Investing in tomorrow's technology will bring jobs and economic growth throughout the UK. That's why last month the government announced the biggest ever investment in the work of the Technology Strategy Board. With £440 million of funding they will support new manufacturing techniques to maintani the UK's position as a world leader in technology and design.

"This joint investment with the Research Councils highlights the commitment from across the sector to boost manufacturing in the UK."

Of that money, £14.7 million will be allocated to 3D printing projects. Already, it's been announced that funding will be going to Renishaw, an engineering company that wants to develop 3D printed facial implants, JRI Orthopaedics, which is working on 3D printed hip replacements, and FDM Digital Solutions, which is developing foot insoles. More projects will presumably follow - in the announcement, the government said money would be available to fund projects lasting between one and three years, in all areas of technology and development.

So - that's some good news to kick off the weekend, isn't it?
